Lovecraft's legacy – insanity in the face of phenomena beyond our comprehension – continues to echo about literature, film and music, even gaming, yet until recently madness, anxiety, stress and the mental cost of adventuring has been rarely explored by the latter as a core mechanic. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. ![]() We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. Sometimes the Collector shows up blocking your only path and you gotta expend way too much fighting him than you should normally.The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. One bad Crit, one single Affliction can send the whole thing into a death spiral. On the other hand, even the biggest fan of Darkest Dungeon can't deny that the RNG can ruin every single setup in the game. You've got a lot more to think about, more things can go wrong, and when they do go wrong they have lasting impacts. Your party members aren't the unshakable badasses you'd see in Final Fantasy. On the one hand, yes, this is a thinking man's RPG. ![]() It's amazing how much people on both sides miss the point of the game.
