Since diamonds occur primarily in igneous rocks, which are not found at the surface in Ohio, they do not occur in this state’s surface bedrock. Prospectors have reported gold in Ross County as well in many of the creeks here. There are known placer gold deposits in Stonelick Creek in Clermont County as well. Ohio Gold Finds There are several creeks within the county that are known to produce gold, including Honey Creek, Friends Creek, and Leatherwood Creek. There is no commercial gold mining activity in the state. Small glacial gold deposits have been found in this area near the Ohio River, but the reports are limited and the quantity of gold recovered has been extremely small. With that said, there are plenty of local and county-owned parks that may allow for gold mining. Panning for gold on Ohio State Forest land is not permitted. ![]() Any hobby prospectors need to get permission from the landowner. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is fairly lenient when it comes to hobby panning. ![]() It is probable that there are many other equally productive localities in the glaciated portion of the state. The best known and most productive localities have been along Stonelick Creek and Brushy Fork, north of Owensville, Clermont County, and north of Bellville, Richland County.
